Apple Pie
The apple pie is a classic American dessert and perfect for all occassions. The deliciously sweet spiced apple filling contrasting with the golden pastry crust makes this the most perfect, comforting dessert that can be enjoyed by the whole family. For extra depth in flavour mix both tart and sweet apples to make this already delicious dessert that one bit better.

    Ingredients:

    For the pastry:
  • 420g Plain Flour
  • 280g Unsalted Butter
  • 150ml water
  • 2 teaspoons of granulated sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • For the filling:
  • 6 large apples
  • 150g granulatred sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of Plain flour
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoon of butter
Method:

For the crust:

  • In a medium bowl mix together the flour and the salt. Add the butter diced into small pieces and crumble it with the flour until combined.
  • Pour in the cold water a little at a time and mix with a fork. Finally, use your hands to bring the dough into a ball.
  • Flatten the dough and cover it in cling film. Leave the dough in the fridge for approximately 30 minutes whilst preparing the filling.
  • For the filling:

  • Peal your apples and thinly slice them. Place these in a large bowl.
  • In a medium bowl combine the sugar, flour, salt and spices together. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples and stir so that they are fully coated.
  • Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and lightly grease you pie dish.
  • When your dough has cooled, remove it from the fridge and divide it into two pieces with one roughly double the size of the other. The larger piece will be for the bottom and the smaller piece for the top.
  • Roll the larger piece into a circle so that it fits into your prepared dish and trim any excess dough from the edges.
  • Spoon the apple mixture into the dish and top with your diced butter. Place the dish into the fridge.
  • For the lattice top:

  • Whilst your dish is in the fridge, roll out the remaining dough and cut it into even strips.
  • Weave the strips to create a lattice top.
  • Take the pie out of the oven and place the lattice over the pie top. Crimp the edges with a fork.
  • Brush egg wash over the pie top for shine and sprinkle with sugar.
  • Bake the pie for roughly 60 minutes or until the filling begins to bubble. Check regularly and cover halfway with foil to prevent the top burning.
  • When the pie is ready remove from the oven and let it cool before serving.
  • Serve with ice-cream, custard or anything of your choosing.
